The author's first book contained a lot of information that a person might want to know if they were considering working on a cruise ship. This book offers less information and is more of an autobiography. After working in the dining rooms aboard Carnival cruise ships, the author gets the opportunity to become an art auctioneer and make some serious money, though his real motivation is to be assigned to the same ship where his girlfriend works. This book follows him through his auctioneer training, his work as an associate, and his first cruise as an auctioneer. It ends there though, leaving some basic questions unanswered. How long did he work as an auctioneer? Was he fired for not meeting the often unrealistic sales quotas, or did he quit due to the stress? Was he eventually reunited with his girlfriend? A short epilogue could have wrapped up everything nicely. We learned from his first book that working on a cruise ship is not all fun and games, but as a concessionaire and member of the staff he was assigned better living quarters, had more time off, and earned much better pay. Since he used to work in the dining rooms for long hours, I expected him to show some sympathy for those crew members. I also expected to hear of the contempt that lower paid crew members might have for him and other staff. The social dynamics on board could have been a great addition to the story but instead there were only a few hints of these things. The book mostly contains tales of his misadventures on shore with his often heavy drinking, arrogant, and womanizing coworkers. While these made for entertaining reading at times, most wreaked of heavy embellishment.I read this book shortly before going on a cruise and hoped to gain a little insight to the art auctions on board. While I can't expect him to give up all the trade secrets, by the end of the book I hadn't learned much. Well, maybe I learned something. If you are willing to work long hours for low pay, then working on a cruise ship might be right for you. Fringe benefits include cheap drinks in the crew bar, and endless opportunities for casual intimate encounters with your coworkers. If you want to remain faithful to your girlfriend who works on another ship and you assume is staying faithful to you, I question your sanity. Oh wait, all of that was covered in the first book so save your money. If you just have to read this one, borrow it from a library or a friend.
This is part two of Brian David Bruns' series in Cruise Confidential. In this book he tells his story of the grueling process to become a Sundance Auctioneer for the Cruise Lines. The training process is very stressful and once he finally gets assigned to a ship, his story continues to be anything but smooth sailing. The author has a way of telling his story in a colorful and engaging manner. The behind the scenes look at the cruises and the politics that go on are very interesting, at times shocking. Overall, the book is well written, funny and just an interesting story. I enjoyed hearing his adventures when the ship would dock for the day, all over the world, as well as the interesting characters he meets along his journey.
Mr. Bruns has a very original, entertaining & humorous writing style. I really enjoyedreading the book but I bought with the idea of learning about the day to day life of Cruise Boat Culture. I wished he would write a book focusing on some of the manydifferent levels of life on the cruise ship. The stewards, the officers, the entertainersthe security etc. None of the books about Cruise life I have read (and I've read several) really gets down to this. All I know for sure is that a good part of the upper level crew members get drunk and bed hop a lot. Okay I get it but there is so much more to know.
I loved the first book (Cruise Confidential) but this one was not nearly as entertaining. I felt like I was reading groundhog day where the same thing happens over and over with no real payoff. I know these are based on actual experience but they also need to be entertaining. I have taken 13 cruises so far and never really been interested in the art auctions and this book only makes that decision seem like a good one. It sounds like they get too much money for what they sell and you really have to know your art to make sure you do not overpay.
Liked the first book more than I expected, and more so with this one.A fun read about a guy following love...er..a woman to sea...and all the experiences that follow. BD Bruns has a fun writing style that keeps you engaged, makes you laugh out loud, and wonder what it would be like to have the guts to do what he did. I have a number of friends who have worked on ships and they all have some great stories but none that compare to this. The narrative and style read like a good friend is giving you a full account of his adventures at sea
Fun, but I thought the first book was a bit better. Some basic errors in grammar, and it feels like he is rambling at times on his relationship & port adventures rather than telling a well thought out story. I'm a fan of cruising so I love to see the other side of it, from the workers point of view. Not sure I will delve much further into the rest of the books - at times this one felt too much like reading somebody's diary.
I bought Cruise Ship Confidential which I found insightful and interesting. Left me wanting more so I looked for another and "behold" Ship for Brains was here. I wanted to learn about the Art sales on ships and wanted to learn more about his relationship development. A VERY QUICK read (supposedly 422 pages but I don't think so). Read it in about a day. Lots of typos. Is this an electronic self-published book? The information about the art sales industry was interesting but the rest of the book was about all the easy sex and how our hero valiantly avoided succumbing to constant temptation (despite flirting with every attractive woman he met) to preserve himself for his distant girlfriend. He comes across as self-absorbed and self-indulgent. The book comes across as a formula repeat of the first one and leaves any mention of the development of his relationship out of the book. I can only assume that there is a third sequel in store. Light fare but a bit of an insult to the reader. Entertaining to read but I left feeling a bit cheated.
