Though popular, these qualitative research and persuasion tactics were not without critics in their time. An author, cultural consultant, and founder of Culture Planning, a company with Fortune 500 clients, Samuel delves into the ways in which Sigmund Freud's theories on psychology were implemented, for better or worse, by the advertising industry more than a half century ago. Samuel analyzes the work of Viennese-trained psychologist Ernest Dichter, along with Paul Lazarsfeld and many others, but it's Freud's contributions that laid the groundwork for ad strategy then-and now. By the '50s and '60s the industry had shifted its focus from how consumers behaved to why, and Samuel contends that Freud's "concept of the unconscious, with its hidden desires that shaped people's behavior, was a particularly powerful idea for marketers to embrace and exploit... a godsend to Madison Avenue." Although subliminal advertising was challenged on ethical grounds, and consumers feared Orwellian invasions of privacy, many of the practices developed at the time, such as focus groups and account planning, are still integral tools of the modern ad trade.

The idea of having an organized PANCE/PANRE review book with pre & post quizzes is wonderful. However, not all the blueprint topics are covered in the CD software. I have to go to the original list published on NCCPA as a guideline. The contents provided by the author are very basic, simple explanations. No images, charts, or tables are found in the program or cannot be edited in the student notes section. The Author provides notes on certain topics, but also has a separate section for you to enter in notes, which is nice and all, but there is no option to print the 2 sections together. They would have to be printed on separate pages. If it would allow you to enter in or edit notes already provided by the author, it would make reviewing much more effective. Also, I wish the pre-test quizzies were included in the CD instead of lugging around the book. Everything worthy of this PANCE/PANRE review is on the CD, I don't know why else anyone would need the book.UPDATE: I tried taking the practice exam included on the CD. The 1st time my score was extremely low (27%). There is no way in hell that I could have a scored that low. So when I reviewed my exam, I noticed that all the answers I know I picked were correct, but the software shows that another answer choice (an incorrect one) was marked. Each question was marked that way. I thought maybe it was a glitch in the software, so I updated whatever Adobe components I needed. I wanted to review over the 1st practice test after restarting my laptop, but the entire exam was gone! The program showed that I had not taken any practice exam. So I thought, what the hell, another exam might help me with more practice. I decided to take a 2nd practice exam. Another 5 hours later, the damn program does the same thing. It continues to choose whatever answer besides the one I choose and marks the question wrong.So I have given this product 1 star (previously 3). It wasted about 10 hours of my precious study/review time. It's infuriating not knowing my actual score and more frustrating that I cannot review any practice exam questions since the program doesn't save it.

Based on the glowing recommendations I'd gotten for this book, I expected a lot more than what I got. The book itself is literally only good for a 25 question bank on each of the 10 or so body systems listed. So, book-wise, you're buying a 250 question PANCE review bank. That's about it. The included CD basically lists a lot of the diseases and disorders you need to know by body system, or clinical specialty, you choose. They claim that the CD program is a whole system to help you review for the PANCE, but in essence, it is just a very clunky word processor for you to take notes in. The authors include their own descriptions of each disease on the CD, which is helpful, but it's just rephrasing what I've already learned. The notes that I did try to take in the program only save about half of the time, even with the program fully updated by the publisher. After trying this program for a few days, I've decided that the only real use I can get out of it is to use the list on the CD that lists most of the pertinent pathologies that I need to study. I'm not using the program to take notes in, that's a waste of time and effort, and the I will take a quick look at the 250 questions in the book and on the CD sometime before I take the PANCE. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone serious about reviewing for the PANCE.

The system is definitely not what I expected. It's basically topic outlines just like your board review course, but you can compare to their notes which I will say are good and detailed, but beware, I have noticed some minor mistakes and the software is a pain. It is supposed to track your progress, and help you organize and set a pace, but it does neither. However, after spending $$$ on the book, I was still using it daily even though I wasn't crazy about it. After a couple of months and finally getting used to the program I went on an out of area rotation and was close to a break down when I discovered all of my notes gone. After an hour on the phone with IT (who were and are still trying to help) basically they tell me that IT IS A KNOW ISSUE that the CD will not save your files. If you do not UNZIP the "Personal Professor" you COULD LOOSE ALL YOUR WORK. They sent me a link on how to save my future work online, however that does nothing for what has already been lost. I talked to the rudest, most useless Customer Service people as well with little accomplished. If you would think that the MoneyBack Guarantee applies to faulty software, you'd be wrong. This product has great potential and it may work well for some, but it delivers only a fraction of what they advertize with a side of disappointment and many software kinks.**If you have the system or are going to get it, please don't trust that little green "save" button. PLEASE Contact IT so that they send you a link on how to save your work (you would think FADavis would add a warning about this or instructions on how to save.)

Please tell me, if you are going to sell a product primarily geared towards writing your own notes... why would you NOT be able to edit the print layout? If I wanted my information spaced out like a kindergartener's abc's or I wanted the obnoxious title of the software to take up 1/4 of every single page, then I suppose it would be great. Otherwise, it is frustrating.If I find a way to correct this, than I will be happy to remove this review... but so far... unimpressed.

Saxophonist and flutist Greg Fishman is an accomplished performer, recording artist, author, teacher and clinician. Born in Chicago in 1967, he began playing professionally at age fourteen. Greg graduated from DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in Jazz Performance, and earned a Masters Degree in Jazz Pedagogy from Northwestern University. He is among the foremost experts on the music of Stan Getz and is the author of three Getz transcription books published by Hal Leonard. His self-published books, Jazz Saxophone Etudes, Jazz Saxophone Duets, and Jazz Trumpet Duets are in circulation world- wide and have been endorsed by top educators and jazz performers, including Michael Brecker, Jerry Coker and Phil Woods. Greg is a contributing author of jazz theory articles for Jazz Improv magazine, JAZZed, Chicago Jazz Magazine, IAJE Jazz Educators Journal, and was featured on the cover of Saxophone Journal, for whom he also writes.
